Character Personality:
A perfect, pretty-boy genius with superior intelligence, flawless social skills, and a keen ability when it comes to deduction -- that is what Yagami Light is made of. The prime example of what a Japanese model student, classmate, and son should be, an upstanding individual with great morals, the son of the chief of police who even helped them on a few difficult cases; his tips being what led to the appropriate arrests and resolution of the cases -- all at the young age of seventeen. His life would have probably been paved in gold, a successful career and a successful family life had the Death Note never come into his life.
But even before the Death Note, Light was filled with a general apathy -- the feeling that the world around him was rotten. Day in and day out the news would report the deaths of criminals, and Light believed that the world was better off without some of the people in it. Because of these feelings, he had no problem testing out the Death Note and upon seeing it work, he realized that he alone had the power to rid the world of evil, that by his hand he could judge who deserved to live and die, and ultimately that he would rise far above that path paved in gold to become a god sitting on a golden throne. This is the point that changes Light from morally sound to morally gray -- all the while believing himself to be the ultimate justice under the psuedo nickname of Kira.
While it was probably always there beneath the facade of perfection, when his god complex deepens Light exhibits all the signs of antisocial personality disorder. As L (the world's greatest detective, and head investigator of the "Kira case") pursued him and backed him into corners or forced his hands, Light found it necessary to start manipulating people. One clear example is when he was being pursued by FBI agent Ray Penbar. Penbar boarded a bus following Light, and as a result of what had been written in the Death Note, a criminal hijacked the bus. Light purposely whispered to the girl he was with that he would take down the criminal to which Penbar instantly protested. Accusing the FBI agent of being an accomplice, Light easily got the man to show him his badge (thus obtaining the name he needed in order to kill with the Death Note). Another example is how he manipulated Misa into helping him, playing on her feelings. Misa became the owner of another Death Note (the second Kira) and managed to find Light. Although he found her more of a nuisance than anything, her shinigami Rem proclaimed that she would kill him if anything were to happen to Misa. With no other choice but to keep her alive, Light told her he would pretend to be her boyfriend on the condition that she did what he said.
Beyond his initial reservations about killing (though said reservations never really manifested themselves beyond his own internal argument that only he could purge the world of the criminals), Light never once believed what he was doing was wrong. Even though the police and L stood against his special brand of justice, the supporters made themselves loud and clear -- feeding his arrogance and fueling his desire to rid the world of criminals. What began as killing those who committed crimes morphed into killing those who opposed him. And what it really proves is that Light is a childish and arrogant spoiled brat who hates to lose. (L even made note of this during one episode, remarking that he is the same way).
Light tends to be very adaptable. If finding the death note and immediately using it with little concern isn't proof enough of this, then it's definitely proven when the Shinigami owner of the notebook, Ryuk, made himself known. After an initial freak out over seeing something other-worldly, Light immediately calmed himself and carried on a casual conversation with the reaper -- even becoming accustomed to his presence enough to play videogames with him or share his latest plans. This adaptability fits into his social life as well. Even after finding out L was after him, and especially after making face-to-face contact with the young man -- Light was able to keep his internal emotions deep down while he maintained a superficial friendliness and a flawless facade. He has the ability to read a great deal into situations (perhaps a bit too much so) and adjusts himself accordingly, recognizing some of the tests that L put him through when trying to find any evidence he could to prove Light was Kira.
There is a degree of paranoia in his personality, but I don't believe this would have existed prior to the Death Note. As Kira, he had to make sure all of his secrets could be hidden along untraceable paths, turning situations that were out of his favor to meet his whims once again. When L got on him and went as far as to make contact, Light had to watch and take particular care in the things he did and said, to the point of nearly overanalyzing L's way of thinking so he could respond in a manner consistent with evading suspicion.
Also! Light's a pretty serious guy. I think there are only a handful of times when he's actually seen smiling and laughing (in a not-so-megalomaniac kind of way) and even then, it's faked. Once is before Naomi Misora when he was trying to play the pleasant son of his police chief to find out the information that she knew about the Kira case, and once when L forced him to write a letter 'as Kira' in response to the second Kira and he slipped in a 'joke' about not caring if L dies. Otherwise, he appears humorless and even a bit boring -- the perfect disguise to blend in with society.
The tl;dr version? Light's a sociopath with a god complex.
Character Abilities you would like to expand on further:
Does the ability to house no remorse as he coldly kills criminals from afar count as an ability??
Haha well if not, Light is pretty adept at hacking. He could get in and out of his father's protected police files without so much as a trace. He has wonderful observational skills and tends to be able to manipulate people accordingly. His intellect, memory, and ability to retain information are top notch as shown from exams he had aced with perfect scores. And as noted before, his deduction skills are up to par with even the world's greatest detective. L even comments they may be better than his.
Light's a GREAT actor! The whole story revolves around him putting on an act to avoid suspicion, and he almost never breaks character, even in the most stressful of situations. He basically leads a dual life.
He's athletic. This is showcased in an intense tennis match between himself and L. Back in middle school, he was even the junior tennis champion, a talent he didn't seem to lose after years of little-to-no practice. That and he can toss a pretty good punch, too! Just ask L's face.
Character Weaknesses you would like to expand on further:
Light has no real formal training in fighting. Intelligence is by far his strong suit, so compared to all the shounen heroes out there, he's not really up to par fighting-wise. Sure, he can punch and hit his target...and he's probably got some decent strength behind it, but in a real fight? Light would have no hope of holding his own.
He's a spoiled brat. Life was handed to him on a silver spoon, a path paved out before him to a bright future and a successful career. His family was fairly well off financially, and I'm sure as the 'golden boy' Light got most of everything he wanted. When he doesn't get his own way, it angers him. For instance, when L bests him, Light will seethe and go into a rage. He's very good about hiding this from the public eye, but he's not quite so skilled at keeping these emotions at bay to himself. The full ugliness of his personality comes out best when it's just him alone in his room with Ryuk.
Light is also a very arrogant person. This arrogance leads him to believe he's invincible, that there's no way L will ever find out about his crimes. L proves him wrong when he starts to get on his trail. In times his own arrogance will lead him into corners where L is able to trap him. Once Light manages to trick Rem into killing L, his arrogance comes out in full force. He doesn't believe anything or anyone is able to stop him after this point; he assumes all of his obstacles have been taken care of. And although Light is taken from before this point in time, it's these thoughts alone that eventually secure his defeat and inevitable death.
This same arrogance leads to the largest, most defining weakness of all. Light believes himself to be a god -- he thinks only he has the ability to rid the world of the criminals and change it into something of his own will. Light truly believes what he's doing is for the betterment of mankind, seeing the world as rotten. He does not accept what he's doing is wrong in any sense of the word and when challenged by L, who claims to be a greater justice, Light believes in the grand scheme of things that he is the one in the right.
[ SOUL CAMPAIGN SECTION ]
What abilities will your character retain in Soul Campaign? Bullet-form is fine.
Obviously, Light won't have the Death Note with him so that will be gone. But otherwise, he was never super-powered, so he will retain all of his abilities.
What weaknesses will your character lose or gain in Soul Campaign? Bullet-form is fine.
:| L's still alive. And now has proof that he's Kira. That's not going to be very fun for him.
Light will have to re-evaluate his goals. In Death Note, he has a very set path and BREW drawing him in will change this greatly. Not to mention, Mello and Near (both antagonists to him in the future) are present within Death City. His main weakness will be the lack of knowledge of what the future brings for him.
Otherwise, the same weaknesses still apply!
The wish Death the Kid made to the BREW in 2009 was to “rescue Death City and stop the waves of Madness from overtaking the world.” By whatever means necessary. Pretend you are the BREW. Why would you choose to bring this character to Death City?
Light may not be the poster boy for upstanding morals, but then again, does he really need to be? What he hoped to accomplish is essentially what Death City and Shibusen do on a daily basis -- getting rid of the corrupt souls and making the world a better place. He would agree with this as well as the basis for their war. As for what he can offer? He's an extremely intelligent individual who could provide insight and possibly read into some of the actions made by the witches. He may not be much of a fighter, but there are plenty of people to take care of the fighting. Death City needs some strategists for their war as well!
If your character has difficulty verbally communicating or can’t verbally communicate at all (mute or non-humanoid), elaborate on how this will be treated in the game. N/A
[ WEAPON ONLY SECTION ]
Why is your character a Weapon and not a Meister?
I honestly think that Light could go either way, and since a weapon is the last open spot I have -- that forces my hand.
But seriously, in a sense the Death Note uses Light as a tool/weapon if you personify the curse it represents. Light becomes so wrapped up in using it that he doesn't realize it's using him, or even if he does, he's completely fine with it. His personality is agreeable enough to go along with a meister/weapon partnership because he will believe that weapons hold the true power. In essence, he becomes the object a meister must use to defeat their enemy, without him a meister would be unable to advance any further. Also, I think because of Light's nature, he would rather not be the one to dirty his hands with the blood of his enemies. He has no problem killing when it's a piece of paper and a pen that he's using, but if you gave him a sword and forced him to face an enemy...I believe he would have some reservations.
ADDITIONALLY (some extra added info! ^^):
The target would have to be pictured in both the meister's and weapon's mind (a la Death Note!) and within sight. So they couldn't choose a target that is just some random person somewhere in China while they're in Death City or something along those lines and only said target will be affected by the words.
Weapon effects would roughly last 5 minutes max all around. Once they get started it's less time, though. Probably very brief -- like anywhere from 30 seconds to a minute. And as for words he would be able to use -- basically verbs. So he could use things like: stop, move, jump, step, fall, trip, slide, waver, twist, break, etc. But it can't be full and complete sentences or a combination of words, so unless the verb can properly convey the action he wants, he can't use it.
Furthermore, the stronger the opponent -- the better the chance said opponent has for being resistant to the written words, to a point of being unaffected at all.
What is your character’s Weapon Form? Why?
Light is a demon fountain pen! .............lol, yes. Seriously.
The weapon form itself is quite simply a slightly-larger-than normal pen, a sleek and glossy red body with a golden tip that's about as long as an exacto-knife (about as sharp too). Because of this, the weapon form can be used to inflict damage by stabbing but because of the size of the pen itself, the meister would have to get extremely close.
What is your character’s Weapon Ability?
With good resonation, if Light's meister writes a one-word command on a sheet of paper, the opponent will obey it. For example, Light and his meister are being attacked by a kishin egg. If they write the word 'pause' -- the kishin will temporarily be forced to stop for a few seconds, allowing them time to avoid the blow. Of course, there are limitations. Light and his meister must both be focused on their opponent for the command to work, otherwise there's a risk that the command will backfire on them and cause the both of them to pause. Furthermore, there is a limit in the type of commands they can write. For instance, they can't write any sort of magic command (ie: a command that wouldn't happen within normal bounds of reality like creating fire out of nothing or swallowing the kishin egg in some sort of black hole).
After 45 kishin egg souls and near-perfect resonance, Light and his partner would be able to write commands that could enhance them instead. They would have to be highly attuned to one another if they wanted it to work and the commands would be limited to a five minute boost in speed, strength, stamina or defense. Any waver in thought, and this could result in the kishin egg getting these enhancements instead. In order to write ANY sort of instant-death command -- the pair would have to have perfect resonation PLUS Light's soul accumulation would have to be 90 or above.
His opponent's are well aware of what they're doing. It doesn't hijack the mind so much as it does the body. Light's weapon ability CAN be used against regular people, however that would require finding a meister that is willing to harm people, and even if there weren't reservations on the end of the meister, there would be on Light's end (unless......of course, he's going after a criminal or someone getting in the way of his plans! THEN NATURALLY HE WOULDN'T CARE.) An additional note: Light's soul wavelength becomes the ink for the pen. As long as he has the strength, it will continue to write. However, in the beginning stages of resonance or after a particularly tough battle, the 'soul ink' may get a bit spotty or run out completely.
[ SOUL INFORMATION ]
Describe your character’s soul with six adjectives.
intelligent, egotistical, cunning, astute, charming, persistent
What does your character’s soul look like? Be creative.
Light's soul is a vibrant red -- and at first glance, it's not much different than your generic souls. If anything, it appears boringly average on the surface and it isn't until it's given a deeper look that one may notice its haughtiness.
